OUGD402 - PPP session - comparing adverts

Comparing Adverts

Using the adverts we created for each other last week, we wrote down a few words that summed our own personalities up to see if they had come across in our adverts.
A group of peers then wrote what message they got about us from our adverts:

what they found common in my two adverts (one created by myself and the other created about me by Sarah Goldthorpe):

  • colourful
  • busy
  • womanly
  • lots of decoration
  • similar script type

Things that they found to be different in the two adverts:

  • layout
  • different amounts of info included
  • confusing layout/ fixed layout
  • mixture of typefaces / use of only 1 typeface

There was very little difference between the two adverts about myself - I have a strong personality it seems!

To compare what I said to what they said on more specific terms ...

What I said about my design;

  • Girly
  • Feminine
  • Youthful
  • Colourful
  • Illustrative

What they said about my design style from the advert;

  • Womanly
  • Busy
  • Colourful
  • Decorative
  • Script type

Very similar observations were made by the group assessing my advert, which is really positive in my opinion, as potential clients can see my suitability/ enthusiasm for their requests.

Should your personality be reflected in your design/ practice?

Pros

  • Gives client an idea of who they are working with (personal level)
  • Shows your suitability for the line of work required
  • Shows clients if you will appeal to their audience (especially if required to present it to them)
  • Suitability for client on a professional level

Cons

  • Showing your personality might show your potential lack of suitability for the job - showing a strong design style might say that you're limited as a designer
  • There's a difference between confidence and arrogance
