OUGD402 - Study task 5 - Where am I now?

PPP study task 5 - Where am I now?

Reflecting on the past few months at university.

10 things I have learnt about myself as an individual and as a learner.

1. I am an adrenaline worker: when it comes to deadlines, I work most focussed and efficiently under pressure (not necessarily stressed).

2. I'm incredibly untidy in my workspace, living space, cooking space etc; something I've come to observe when living independently.

3. I am a 'people' person and so I find it incredibly difficult to work when alone or unaccompanied (in any environment).

4. I am not very diverse in my design style or design choices (materials, platforms, experimentation is usually limited) and I generally stick to what I know unless pushed because thats what I enjoy.

5. I like to be in a family-style environment the most, I feel most motivated in this environment.

6. I had no real problems adjusting to living independently, on the contrary to my expectations.

7. I'm starting to see more interest in other forms of design as well as graphic design.

8. My time management is very poor and everything is usually left until last minute as I lack motivation when alone, and am alone a lot...

9. I tend to 'worry' my work as opposed to 'forget about it and panic later' and have procrastination issues as opposed to laziness.

10. I am not as fearful of nightclubs as I thought!

10 things that I have learnt about myself as a designer:

I have learnt that I am most interested in 3d & illustrative design.

1. I love pop- up designs and paper engineering.

Artists such as Robert Sabuda, Bruce Foster and Sam Ita I find to be the most inspiring at the moment.

Robert Sabuda;

Bruce Foster;

Sam Ita

2. Window displays and environmental decoration.

This agency, Planarama, are a perfect example of what I want to get involved in.

3. tabletop point of sales ( perfume stands etc).

4. Creative environment concept design (theme parks, restaurants, entertainment facilities).

Concept and creative design for entertainment facilities at Walt Disney World has been my dream since I was about 14 when I learnt that you can actually get paid to do something as cool as this. Imagineering at Disneyworld has several internship programmes, but unfortunately these are only open to students studying in the US.

However, Disney are constantly updating new job opportunities, some even based in Leeds! I will keep looking for what they would require and try and constantly get my portfolio to the best of my ability!

5. Poster designs.

(see artists below in illustration design that I aspire to)

And Jessica Hische for her gorgeous typographic art;

6. Creative packaging design for food, clothes, products, cosmetics, toys.

Louise Fili is inspiring in her packaging designs:

7. branding and identity

A brilliant design house I'm really interested in would be 'Shoot the Moon' based in Altrincham, because of their specialism in Branding and Identity.

I love the work of Louise Fili and her elegant Branding and Identity style;

8. Illustration and child- friendly artwork.

I really love the style of artist Shag;

And artist Eric Tan;

And Tom Whalen;

9.  Working with light and colour in a 3d environment.

I really like the way that artist Brittany Lee utilises paper and light in a crafty way to illustrate her art;

10. Design for weddings, events and greetings

 I really like the intricacy and high standard of wedding & event stationery design:
